9/30/2001- Although many people do not have much to comment on Vicki Zhao’s voice, her acting skills and youthfulness have always been the focus of the audiences at large. According to report, it was said that, Vicki was holding a concert at Tung Guan on 22nd Sept, therefore we {We, as in the reporters/writers of this issue} decided to attend.
When we reached the concert venue, we found out that it was a commercial gimmick. It was not a Vicki Zhao Wei concert, merely a concert in which Zhao Wei will appear in briefly. The organizer was using Vicki’s name and popularity to attract audiences. Although the most expensive ticket went for RMP480, they managed to attract tens of thousands of audiences.
The majority of the audiences were children, just like Zhang Wei Jian’s (Hong Kong singer / actor) PRC concert tour a while back. The “concert?was at Zhang An Mall in Tung Guan. The location was merely marked out with some blue & white canvases. The stage was a T shape catwalk. The “concert?started more than 2 hours and Vicki was not on stage. The MC did their best to calm down the audience by telling them that “Vicki is now drawing her left brow???she is now putting on her right ear-rings?etc. The audience appeared to be very patience. They were happily enjoying the performance of some folk dances, Zhui Xue Wen and Hong Kong’s Wong Shu Kei etc.
It was approximately 10.50pm, Vicki appeared in a red, sleeveless dress. Many audiences rushed onto the stage. Meanwhile Vicki was apologizing to the audience for being late. The audience went wild. Expression such as ?I love you very much? “I’ve been thinking about you every day? ?My heartache is caused by waiting for you? “I have all the dreams and imagination about you?went flying all over. One middle age man snatched the microphone and said, “Zhao Wei, we are all very excited seeing you?
Other than singing, Vicki played some games with the audience, her fans took the opportunity asking her whether she is going out with Leo Ku at the moment. Vicki said, ?How can that be??Then, there was a audience that said, ?No, Zhao Wei’s boyfriend is Yea MaoChing.?Vicki immediately said, ?That was the past.? She quickly changed subject to prevent embarrassment.
She then said, “Don’t ask those unhealthy question, let me ask if you know in which year did the Sept 18th incident occurred?? Unexpectedly, one of the lady audience snatched the microphone and said, “How much wealth do you have?? Vicki said, “definitely not as much as what has been reported. Because I am popular in Hong Kong, therefore, some said that I am one of the richest PRC actress. If I am the richest, there is no need for me to work and I can afford to settle on an island and be a writer.? This lady audience then started to challenge Vicki’s wealth. Vicki did not answer her question directly but started to urge everyone to do more charity works such as building more schools.
When talked about her career, Vicki mentioned that the Hong Kong produced movie “Xi Yang Tien Shi (The Angels of Twilights)?is her first job of 2001. She was not working between January and June. The reason was that, she was waiting for the revised script of a movie she was supposed to be in. But when the script was finally finished, she was not able to take on that movie due to timing factor. While this conversation was going on, one audience asked if Vicki has been dieting. She answered, “When I was in Hong Kong, all the actress was like African Refugee because of their constant dieting, I felt very lucky because the life in PRC is good and, I feel healthy?
After half hour of such conversation and four songs, Vicki left and passed the stage to Zhang Ming Min. Although Zhang is a very good singer, but because it was quite late, many audiences have started their journey home.

9/30/2001- Zhao Wei has put on weight. Her mini skirt cannot hide her “rounded?figure. Zhao Wei admitted that she has put on weight and blamed her weight problem on having to play her character in “Xi Yang Tien Shi (The Angels of Twilights)?- a cop turned lady killer.
Talk about movie and playing a killer
R= reporter
V = Vicki Zhao
R: Are you playing a lady cop in “Xi Yang Tien Shi (The Angels of Twilights)?
V: I was suppose to in the beginning. But, the my role later turned into the role of a killer.
R: How does it feel playing a killer for the first time?
V: It was difficult. I had to be hung by “steel wire?and “fly?all over. It was tiring.
R: Have you put on some weight recently? Does it have anything to do with being a “killer?
V: Of course. Killer has to be strong and healthy. I jog everyday, that’s why I put on quite a bit of weight because of the muscles that I am aquireing.
R: Are you not worried that your fans cannot accept your figure?
V: Actually, many people like the “plum?me better because I don’t look as well when I am skinny.
R: Do you have any special skill in playing the Killer?
V: Yes. I have to "kill" with my eyes.
R: You played an ugly lady in “Shao-Lin Soccer? Aren’t you worry that playing this type of character might affect your image?
V: I am not afraid. I love to play these plain Jane types of character and still be able to win the approval of the audience and make them like the character. It is indeed not important whether people like me or not in the real life.
Talk about popularity and Guinness Book of Records.
R: Recently, one Hong Kong newspaper indicated that, among all actresses in China, you have the highest income, what do you think?
V: That is ridiculous. If I am really that rich, I’ll settle in an island and be an author.
R: There must be some truth to it. Otherwise, the newspaper would not say so.
V: It was because they thought that because I am popular in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, therefore I must know how to make money off my popularity. It is not as straightforward as that. The Hong Kong actors are better in marketing themselves whereas the actors in China are less apt at it.
R: How can you tell whether you are popular or not?
V: Well, for example, when I am buying a meal, the fans that comes would break the Guinness Book of Records...then I'll know!
Talk about rumors and unhealthy issues
R: Do you have a boyfriend as of now?
V: NO.
R: So, what is going on with the rumor of Leo Ku and you?
V: Him & me? How can that be?
R: Do you still have contacts with Alec Su?
V: Him again?
R: Then, what about your ex-boyfriend, Yea Mao Ching? Still maintaining contact?
V: Those are things of the past, lets not talk about it. Can we not talk about these rumor, these are unhealthy issues.

Zhao Wei, Sue Chi and Karen Mok, Did Not Get Along?
The reporter met Shu Chi, Vicki Zhao & Karen Mok at the set of “Xi Yang Tian Shi?(The Twilight Angels). The three of them look like very closed sisters, which obliterated the rumor that the three were not friends. Since the very beginning when the Twilight Angels has just started filming, there have been a number of rumors created by reporters saying that the three main female leads in the movie did not get along. But when the reporters visiting the set sees the three girls together, the rumors were immediately dissolved.
Zhao Wei says that as the three of them were very outgoing and straightforward, there is not an ounce of truth in the rumors. If they did not like one another, they would not act all nice to one another in front of the reporters.
According to the Hong Kong media, Shu Qi said, while she was having Italian with Karen Mok the night before, she had an urge to call the reporter to witness their friendship and let them know how boring they were to create such untruths.
*Edited*
9/11/2001-Lately Zhao Wei has been busy filming her latest movie, "Twilight Angel" in Hong Kong. She says that for the movie, all three female leads, including Karen Moore, Sue Qi and her, has to learn martial arts. At first, Zhao Wei says, she would feel pain for weeks after one lesson. But now, as time passes, she would only feel soreness for a couple of days.
Because she claims that she is a bit more "meaty" than her fellow co-workers, not only does Vicki take lessons for martial arts, but she also exercise daily in hope of losing weight. After some time, Vicki says that her body has become more fit.
Her next movie, which is the custom movie invested by foreigners, "Heros" is going to start filming next month. Therefore Vicki has to hurry and finish up the filming for "Twilight Angels" by the end of the month.
Though her job is hard, Vicki claims that she is enjoying her stay at Hong Kong right now, for even though she had been in Hong Kong before, it had always been a hurried visit. Now, she could wander through the streets as long as she wore a hat to disguse herself.
8/14/2001-This summer, the one winning movie in Hong Kong was the movie starring Zhao Wei and Stephan Zhou which has set a new record in the movie world. Zhao Wei's fame seems to have swept through Hong Kong once again. Every time there is a fans meeting, it seems thousands of fans would rush to meet their idol, leaving the streets bare and empty. While some artists might not get on with the reporters in Hong Kong, Zhao Wei's situation with the Hong Kong reporters seems at its best.
Not only is Zhao Wei winning the hearts of the Chinese people, but she is hoping to win the love of audience worldwide in her new movie "Twilight Angel", which is reported to by financed by international companies. For this movie, Zhao Wei shall be starring with Hong Kong's red hot actresses Karen Moore and Sue Qi. Zhao Wei shall also be required to stay in Hong Kong for one month for the filming, in which she happily replies that she shall definity be able to see more of Hong Kong now.
Recent news leaked that because Zhao Wei is seemingly always out somewhere filming, she hardly gets to see her family at all. To solve this problem, Vicki decided to buy a new house in which her entire family has moved into. That way, when Vicki was home, she would be with all her family.
It seems luck was with our Vicki this year in both career and family.

Zhao Wei is upset over Vincent Ye
Recently when Zhao Wei was in the news again, she didn¡¯t hesitate one bit when talking about her new song ¡®The last break-up ¡¯ (Zui hou yi ci fen shuo). It¡¯s based on what had happened to Zhao Wei and her feelings. Talking about Vincent Ye and his present girlfriends, Li Ting Yi¡¯s love blossom. From Tian Fu Zao Bao reports (June 28th), Zhao Wei said, ¡° ¡®The last break-up ¡¯ is solely based on our break-up. At that time, I talked a lot of words from heart to Aunt Qiong Yao. Like back to those painful days, when Zhao Wei was informed of Vincent Ye and Li Ting Yi¡¯s relationship, she unhappily said that Li Ting Yi can do whatever she wants. And she, Li Ting Yi and I, Zhao Wei have no business.
When the reporter pressed on asking if there was a chance that they would get back together. Zhao Wei didn¡¯t disagree. She only mentioned that she has a lot of work now, and no time spare to have a relationship. ¡°A relationship is too overtaxing one¡¯s energy; Single is much better.¡±

Zhao Wei eats fruits to help her keeping her colour
Zhao Wei represents the ¡°Red Earth¡± make-up: white soft skin, with blushing red. Other than Zhao Wei¡¯s natural beauty, she relies on fruits and vegetables to keep her colour.
Zhao Wei has a pair of big, attractive watery eyes. Taking her to the fame world in a short time. Also, ever since becoming famous, she has become more and more beautiful. And is known as the ¡®messenger of beauty¡¯ by the make-up company ¡®Red Earth¡¯.
For her to have such a well-kept skin, it¡¯s astonishing. The people she works with has let out that she¡¯s a kind person and understanding. When it comes to eating, she¡¯s not picky but to be honest, if one¡¯s skin can be so soft, it comes from the genes.
Other than her natural beauty, Zhao Wei is also careful about her everyday health, using fruits and vegetables to replenish her looks. She said, ¡°Well, I don¡¯t feel extremely pretty, but it gives me a sense of well-being on the inside. Fruits and vegetables are a necessity to me life.¡±
Zhao Wei mentioned also mentioned that once a friend gave her some tips. To help your skin looking soft, and moisturising, mix all the green veggies together, and squeeze to juice/pur¨¦e then eat it, or make them into salads. She said, ¡°This a very effective way. To be, it¡¯s worked! (Wan-shi-wan-ling)¡±
Zhao Wei¡¯s beauty helped her to become the ¡®Ten-thousand fascination¡¯ in H.K/Taiwan. She was modest, ¡° ¡®Ten-thousand fascination¡¯? ¡ I don¡¯t think so. But I believe the ¡®Ten-thousand fascination¡¯ appears more often in girls than boys. An attractive girl¡¯s smile can have the power to knock people out.

Many had come from outside Beijing. Most of the fans are under 10-something, female students. They should¡¯ve been in school, we don¡¯t know whether if they had excused them from their classes. The fans ranged from youth to elders, people coming for their children or just plain ¡°XiaoYanZi¡± ¡®s fan. They stood in a long queue, waiting patiently mixed with excitement for Zhao Wei to appear. Passer-bys and buses moved slowly or stop to watch the excitement. It was a great atmosphere.
The autograph started at 10.30, though there were many fans, but there was order. To keep the security in check, the record company and shopping centre prepared many cautions. A spokesperson said that this location and time was chosen to reduce the mass crowd from a security point of view.
Even with all the preparations, around 3000-4000 people turned up at the session. Due to cautions, many had been kept outside. They wept openly. The ones who saw her, she was being photographed, handshakes constantly, some even asked her to sign on their clothes. Also, there were some that had guts, kissed Zhao Wei¡¯s hair while she was signing; A fan told her, ¡°I like so much¡± before started crying. There were three workers with them as well.
Even though Zhao Wei, Leo, Karen Moore and Fen De Luan was famous, they hardly have any celebrity's feeling to them, and sat there with the rest of the costumers, chatting, laughing, and eating the entire time. She says that since the break up she has not even seem Ye Mau Xin, though they've kept in touch with the telephone. Zhao Wei adds that something must have troubled Ye and his girlfriend's relationship to have brought about this rumor.

7/18/2001-After the three month period of hard work on their newest movie, Saolin Soccer Team, both Stephan Zhou and Vicki Zhao could finally let out a sigh of relief as the report of the ratings at the movie theaters were made public. In the very first day of viewing, Saolin Soccer Team beat the rest of the Hong Kong movies this summer at the theaters with the highest ratings.
Since the movie has been finished, Zhao Wei and Stephan Zhou has endlessly promoted the movie to the fullest. Every time a fans meeting was held, the two male and female lead of Saolin Soccer Team would be surrounded by screaming fans. Each time, the fans would go out of control in their will to be close to their idols.
Now, all the hard work was finally shown to be well worth it. No doubt Stephan and Zhao Wei shall be celebrating their success very soon.
7/18/2001-The new Hollywood invested Chinese movie, "Twilight Angel" which was to feature three red-hot actresses, Sue Qi, Zhao Wei as well as Karen Moore, is due to start filming this very month. At first, because of Cecelia Cheung, who was suppose to take Sue Qi's part had cried off, there was confusion among the producers as they had to switch parts for the three new members of the cast. In the end, the roles were devided fairly among the three main actresses.
In the movie, Zhao Wei and Su Qi was to act as sisters, while Karen Moore was to take the role of a policewoman.
To accomodate her part in the movie, Zhao Wei had started her lessons on Kung Fu well in advance, and should be well prepared to take on her difficult role in the first international movie she has ever participated in.
7/11/2001- It's hard these days for Chinese actress Zhao Wei to go anywhere in China without turning heads, not least her hometown in the southwest province of Anhui. "I am afraid the entire city would show up at my doorstep. The mayor would come and see me, relatives who used to beat me when I was a naughty child would ask to take pictures with me. It's baffling and very tiring," said Zhao, 25, during a recent interview with Reuters.
Zhao leapt to stardom at just 21 when she was plucked from Beijing's prestigious Film Academy to star as a bogus princess in a Taiwanese television series set in the Qing Dynasty.
For nights on end, millions of viewers sat glued to their television sets to watch mischievous "Little Swallow" - Zhao's nickname in "The Pearl Princess" - and play pranks on the villains.
The actress hasn't looked back since.
A handful of television series, a string of movies and several record albums later, little of her initial appeal seems to have waned.
Zhao divides her time between China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where she was mobbed by fans recently while promoting a new film, "Shaolin Soccer," in which she appears far from royal.
"Have you seen it? I looked disgusting in it," declared the chirpy actress.
In the film, which combines martial arts with soccer, Zhao appears as a timid and vile-looking chef who falls for her co-star comedian Stephen Chiau, dubbed Hong Kong's answer to rubber-faced Hollywood star Jim Carrey.
Zhao described the deadpan actor, who also directed the film, as the most demanding film maker she had come across.
"I felt bad at times because I felt I wasn't delivering what he wanted and that was frustrating."
The mainland-born actress, who had to undergo heavy make-up to look "bad," shunned the thought of a sequel.
"Never again, once was enough."
But by accepting the role, the cute Mandarin pop star clearly had a point to prove.
"It doesn't matter what role I play or how I have to look. I like roles that are unique... it has to be special."
Zhao sidestepped a question on how she compared herself with Hollywood darling Zhang Ziyi, who shot to fame after starring in martial arts epic "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."
"It's extremely lucky to be in an Ang Lee movie. Anyone given the chance would be world famous.
"He is of course one of them but the list can go on and on," she said when asked which directors she would like to worth with.
Zhao said she was involved in two film projects currently, one in the kung-fu genre and the other by a Hong Kong director, but she gave few other details.
Zhao said her friends were far from jealous of her success.
"Those who used to be in my class get better job offers. They all found work because they were in Zhao Wei's class so they are very thankful."
But the star admitted she sometimes grew tired of the price of fame.
During a two-month stint in New York earlier this year, she revelled in anonymity. The actress is not well known outside of Asia.
"When one becomes too well-known, narcissism takes charge. All I am is an ordinary girl and I get that feeling back when I am abroad," she said.
"There, I became less self-conscious. I was able to walk around with my head up." Reuters

Vicki saga: is fan¡¯s donation for real?
By Teo Pau Lin
Further developments to news that a dying teenage fan had left $90,000 to China-born actress Vicki Zhao Wei are whipping the regional media into a frenzied spin. Over the past three weeks, the regional entertainment scene had been abuzz with news that a 13-year-old Singaporean fan had left the 24-year-old actress the sum of money for her to donate to charity.
But on Monday, when Life! Interviewed the young girl¡¯s aunt, the media¡¯s only source of contact close to the girl, several questions were raised about how authentic the offer is.
Her aunt, who only wished to be known as Mrs Yang, called Life! On Monday saying that there were errors in stories published on Zhao that day. The latter was in twon to romote her new TV serial, Romance In The Rain.
Mrs Yang said that contrary to the reports, the teenager was a girl, not a boy, and that Zhao had never net her parents.
She also said she had brought up the girl since she was two years old. She siad the girl¡¯s father had died when she was very young and her mother had married an American heart surgeon and had migrated to New York, leving the girl in Mrs Yang¡¯s care.
¡°She was a very bright girl. She scored 274 for her PSLE exams,¡± she said, adding that the girl was supposed to enter Raffles Girls¡¯ School this year. She declined, however, to reveal which primary school the girl attended.
The money bequeathed to Zhao, Mrs Yang said belonged to an endowment fund set up for the girl by her mother, who is a housewife.
Mrs Yang added that the girl had a brain tumour which killed her around Christmas last year.
When Life! Checked through the obituary columns published in The Straits Times between Dec 8 and Dec 30 last year, there was none announcing the death of a teenage Chinese girl.
Mrs Yang who claimed to be a doctor in her 40s, said the girl succumbed to cancer which had spread ¡°wildly¡± from her brain.
¡°When she died, she whispered to me that she wanted me to constantly send flowers to Vicki. She also wanted me to give her money to Vicki to help donate it to people who need it, ¡° she said.
¡°And she said, ¡°Auntie you must do this for me. And you must tell her I like her a lot, a lot, a lot a lot.¡±
When Life! asked to interview her in person, Mrs Yang said she was unable to meet as she would be going overseas today.
She added that she spoke recently to Zhao over the phone through the actress¡¯ record company in Taipei, Avex Trax.
But her repeated requests to meet the actress personally had been turned down by Zhao¡¯s management.
When asked why she had to meet Zhao first before handing over the money, she replied: ¡°My niece wanted me to tell her some things face-to-face.¡±
According to a spokesman for Music Street, Avex Trax¡¯s representative here, doubts about the offer¡¯s authenticity have been circulating in Zhao¡¯s record company all along. He said many believe that Mrs Yang is an obsessed fan who cooked up the story just to get a chance to meet Zhao.
But Mrs Yang insisted: ¡°I¡¯m not a crazy fan. I just want to fulfill my obligation to my niece.¡±
